I can verify that there are a couple players I’ve pretty much accepted as buyers because I’ll see their names on the MB losing millions on Materia and Minions (occasionally the SAME minion multiple times, a million to 2 million a piece, no clue why purchase multiple minions) etc.
While standing in Ul’dah for amount 50 THMs do a player search. Just keep refreshing every 5 seconds or so to the list and you’re going to see 5-10 distinct names in the list every time. These characters all have one class at 50 (THM), are frequently in an FC with a gibberish name, and typically sit in the Quicksand or off in a small corner of the world spamming Wanderer’s Palace and AoEing down all of the waste, probably using teleport hacks to circumvent the gates and to avoid taking damage from the mobs (so they don’t want a healer). It may not be -fast-, exactly, but it’s a low risk of being banned compared to shard botting, and creates new gil instead of relying on market prices for shards.
There was a man in our old FC that kept buying Primal runs for relics way back in the day. At first we thought he only farmed a lot since he played at work. Next, when we were talking about ff14-gil ffxiv gil buying our house he said he’d only buy the gil for it since thats what he was doing for his Primal runs.
Sadly this is going to be the comparison people consistently make, although the game types and issues are totally different. Blizzard has skewed individuals RMT perceptions for many years to come as a result of a poor choice of game to implement it in.
As I don’t care about housing or other gil dumps, in xiv, I have not seen much demand for gil, and the deficiency of open world nms and hnms makes promising fairly useless. So mostly I’ve crafting for my personal use and been botting to level up classes. In xi I was considerably denser with my activities, having the ability to claim Sozu or Argus every time I was there vs legit campers was definitely something anyone there camping could have noticed, but still it never was a difficulty. In the end of ffxi I sold about $1k worth of gil, when I quit, and my character sold for $3k. All of this was before the degree increase in xi, I have no clue what markets or the game are like now.
